This is an open letter from one of our Cookies to the Mentors and Volunteers who have been there for him over the years that he's been with Mama Hill's Help.  He's asked to remain anonymous online...

Dear St. Francis and Family,

I’ve been thinking lately about what happens in my mind when I am faced with racism, approached by a gang member, or approached with negativity in any instance. I realized that

MHH Enlightenment Academy Charter School will be opening on September 1, 2016. The charter school will be composed of ten students working to obtain high school diplomas. Virtual curriculum will be completed online, with weekly tutoring and assignments. Completed assignments will be faxed to the state for assessing. After each student has completed required workload equated with earning HS diploma they will...

For my birthday, two good friends invited me on an all-expense paid cruise. I had a wonderful time enjoying all the sights, sounds, and of course the tastes. However, the most rewarding part of my trip was the return home to my cookies, who greeted me with chocolate cake, warm smiles and hearty hugs! It was obvious that I had been missed. Little do they know I missed them just as much!

I say that to say thi...

Today was a great day! Mama Hill's Help, thanks to St. Francis Episcopal Church, Nancy Carter from Four Seasons, and Elspeth Tavarres of the WIFTS Foundation, was able to distribute Christmas gifts to TWENTY FAMILIES! We are so grateful for all the generosity and loving spirit that we've received from our friends and family this holiday season. God is good!

Cleopatra came to Mama Hill's Help in 2007, and during her first visit, she said to Mama that she had "found an angel." Cleopatra is an extraordinary young lady. She's very intelligent, well spoken, and wise beyond her years. Mama says that she has a good spirit and an old soul. We all fell in love with Cleopatra very quickly. We soon came to learn that Cleopatra's biological parent was being physically and...

One sunny afternoon in March, Marshell's little sister Poo Poo confirmed our suspicions. "Marshell is pregnant, I'm gonna be an Auntie!" she said, "and it's a girl!" It turns out the first part was true. Marshell was pregnant with a baby boy. At first, we were very worried and horrified by the news. Marshell and her family had recently become homeless again. What must we do to ensure that another little bab...

The following is a poem by one of our Cookies, Christine. It was published with her permission....

What love got to do with it?

When your live is worse than a volcano

because you're feeling it with all kind of pain.

Because your childhood was not perfect

Who can you blame?

What love got to do with it?

When you're taking your anger out on other people.

Because of what you're going through

and things that happen in yo...

"A child is born with a heart of gold, then the waves of the world turn that child's heart cold." - Earth, Wind and Fire

This is what I see happen in my children. No child comes into the world wih beady eyes and a gun. Children are born pure and innocent and then something happens to change them. Our philisophy is that you cannot ask a child to pick up a pencil and learn until you treat the whole child. I in...

On December 7th, Mama Hill's Help attended the Christmas Party at St. Francis Episcopal Church. Event organizers Lauren and Liz Colagiuiri went above and beyond to ensure the Christmas Spirit was alive and well. Among the activities were snowball fights and sledding, cookie decorating, face painting, Christmas Carolers, snacks and hot cocoa, and of course Santa Claus made an appearance!

To conclud...

Scooby Doo was one of my students at Crenshaw High School. He was a 15-year-old African American Male in my 6th period English Class. Why do I remember Scooby Doo?  Because he was an extraordinary and extremely intelligent young man.

On Thursdays, the students were assigned to write a five-paragraph essay on a topic that they were allowed to choose themselves. They would then be required to deliberate on the...

Our first annual Celebrate the Children fundraising event, held on September 27th, was an awesome fun-filled day for Mama Hill's Help and the Watts community.
